The Pneumonia and diarrhea progress report 2018, reported that 1 in 4 children that died before their first birthday worldwide in 2016, were affected by diarrhoea or Pneumonia.

The diseases killed over 0.2million children in India alone. This puts India among the top 15 countries with high rates of Under-five mortality (U5MR) due to these deadly diseases. In fact, they are the top two causes responsible for most child deaths in India.

Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia and Diarrhoea (GAPPD) aims to end all deaths due to these preventable diseases by 2025.

Given the vast inequalities in India in terms of  economy and access to health, will this be an achievable goal? What kind of measures are required to stop diarrhoea and Pneumonia from killing Indian Children?
